News Archive Management Improves Efficiency and Production Richness for KVOA
By Aaron Diezman, Assistant Director of Engineering, KVOA-TV
KVOA-TV is the NBC affiliate in Tucson, Arizona, owned by Cordillera Communications. Our station produces over 30 hours of live newscasts every week.
We discovered Masstech’s newsroom media management solution during our search for a file-based news archiving system. Our old archive process had been to record the selected clips to video tape out of our editing systems, which tied up both the systems and the staff. Our catalog for the archived content was a three-ring binder, and if we wanted to restore the archived clips we needed to recapture them from tape. The whole process was very inefficient.
Our primary goal for the new archive management solution was to increase efficiency. We wanted to free our journalists and resources of the old labor-intensive processes so they could focus on creating richer content. The solution needed to make it easy for users to archive, find, and recall clips without needing to understand technical details, or requiring a lot of training. And the system also needed to fit our budget, of course.
Seamless Integration with Third Parties
Masstech’s newsroom solution met all of our criteria. We were immediately impressed by its ease of use, and we particularly liked its ability to integrate directly with our AP ENPS newsroom computer system, enabling users to interact with the archives without leaving the NRCS interface. The Masstech solution also integrated seamlessly with our Nexio playout servers and Velocity editing software from Imagine Communications, streamlining our workflow.
Legacy Archive Ingest
We started using the Masstech solution immediately for all new content when we first deployed it. Recently we began to use it to ingest our legacy archived footage starting with the most important clips, which were probably around 20% of the legacy content. Our Masstech system now manages over 47,000 assets totaling approximately 45TB of storage in our Spectra Logic T50e LTO data tape library, and we add between 300 and 400 clips to it each week.
Huge Time Savings
The move to the Masstech solution has been a huge time saver for our staff. They can now use the time they used to spend on archiving and content management towards more productive tasks rather than manual archiving and content management. Whereas our old process took our users and systems away from preparing for the next newscast, with Masstech it is pretty much “fire and forget”. The users never have to leave the NRCS interface, and archiving happens in the background without interrupting production.
Finding, viewing, and retrieving archived content is easy, too. Our journalists can search the archive using ENPS’s native tools, and preview the video right from the ENPS interface. Once they find what they’re looking for, they can restore it from the archive and move it into the editing environment by dragging-and-dropping within the NRCS.
The Masstech solution has saved us hundreds, if not thousands, of hours, of labor each year. And from a production standpoint, the Masstech system has made it so easy for our journalists to re-use content that they do so more often now, improving our newscasts with richer content.
The system has proven to be stable and reliable. In the rare occasion when we have needed help from Masstech, their support team has been very responsive and helpful. We’re about to deploy the latest version of Masstech’s comprehensive MAM software, and are looking forward to the improvements it will bring us.
The Masstech newsroom media management solution has given us the efficiency, ease of use and savings we were looking for, and their ongoing advances position us well for the future.
